David Turner, ex-employee of Solar Systems delivers a speech to an emphatic crowd. He said that Germany currently employs 50 000 workers in solar energy alone, equivalent to four times the total number of people presently employed by the aluminium industry in Australia! Surprising, given that the conditions in Germany are far less optimal for solar power than here in Australia.

Adam Bandt from The Victorian Greens spoke about the consequences of the proposed CPRS – no reduction in emissions as Australia will effectively buy pollution permits from less developed countries to warrant the continuation of business as usual by big coal and polluting industries. He drew a stark contrast between the Government’s rapid assistance to banks and financial service companies due to the global financial crisis and the lack of response to the collapse of Solar Systems during a time of climate crisis. Adam will be contesting Federal Minister for Finance and Deregulation Lindsay Tanner in next year’s election in the only marginal Labor/Greens electorate in the Country.

The turn-out was fantastic, reflecting the level of community concern over the closure of Solar Systems. Thanks to everyone that made it happen. The movement depends on the actions of each and every one of us.

Last minute rally details

11 10 2009

Ok folks, in case you are still wondering about any of the details for the rally today, Sunday 11 October, here they are:

The rally starts at 2:00 pm at the Solar Systems factory on Grosvener Street in Abbotsford. Please check the map if you are not sure about the location.

Please endeavour to walk, cycle, or take public transport to avoid unnecessary carbon emissions. The location is very accessible, just a short tram ride from the city on the 109 tram alighting at stop 23 on the corner of Flockhart and Victoria streets. Timetable information can be found on the Metlink website. The factory is on the banks of the Yarra, which makes for a picturesque walk if you may be so inclined.

The forecast for Sunday is looking fantastic. Sunny with a high of 22°C. Come along and make a day of it. Have fun and stay safe. Above all, make some noise about the future of Solar Systems.

Hope to see you there!

Leafleting at Gleadell Street Market

5 10 2009

Four of us braved the cold on Saturday morning to promote the Rally at Gleadell Street market in Richmond. The message was generally well received – it’s great to see the local community getting behind it. We even spoke to a parent of one of the former workers made redundant from Solar Systems, who was very happy to see us out supporting the cause. We dispatched an estimated 1000 flyers over six hours!

With less than a week leading up to the rally time is running out to spread the word. We will be leafleting at the following events this week:

Tuesday (6 Oct), 4:00 pm – some of us are meeting at the main Melbourne University tram stop on Swanston Street to hand out leaflets
Thursday (8 Oct), 10:00 am – some of us will leaflet a construction union delegates meeting at Trades Hall in the council chamber
Saturday (10 Oct), from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm – again at Gleadell Street Market in Richmond
Saturday (10 Oct), from 12:00 pm – some of us will leafleting the Rally against the War in Afghanistan starting in the City Square corner Collins & Swanston Streets
Sunday (11 Oct – day of the rally), 10:00am – 12:00pm – Markets at Collingwood Children’s Farm

We invite you to come along to any of these places to support our campaign, help us promote the rally, and meet the friendly people behind the action to save Solar Systems. If you would like to come, you can email or simply show up at any of the above dates/times/locations.
